DEC Forest Rangers responded to three separate emergencies in the Catskills over three days in October, including one that required an aerial evacuation and another that kept rescuers out late into the night.

On October 12 at 5:41 p.m., Greene County 911 requested DEC Forest Ranger assistance for a hiker who had fallen 15 feet on the Escarpment Trail near Sunset Rock.

Forest Rangers Betts, Commerford, Dawson, Fox, Rigano, and Rusher treated and warmed the 47-year-old Manhattan resident. Using ropes, a litter, and a wheeled litter, the rangers carried the hiker to a waiting LifeNet helicopter, which transported the patient to a hospital. The incident was cleared at 10:30 p.m.

The following evening, October 13, Ray Brook Dispatch received a call at 9:15 p.m. reporting two dehydrated hikers on the Mink Hollow Trail in the Indian Head Wilderness Area.

At 11:32 p.m., Forest Ranger Fox reached the two hikers from Pennsylvania, provided them with food and water, helped warm them, and escorted them out of the woods. The incident was cleared at 1:30 a.m. on October 14.

Later that day, at 7:20 p.m., Greene County 911 requested Forest Ranger assistance for a hiker with a lower leg injury on the Kaaterskill Falls Trail.

Forest Rangers Fox and Rigano joined Hunter Police, Tannersville Rescue, a Greene County medic, Haines Falls Fire Department, Greene County Twin Clove Technical Rescue, Greene County Sheriff's deputies, and New York State Police in responding to the incident.

The responders reached the 44-year-old hiker, treated the injury, and used a wheeled litter to transport the patient to the Laurel House Trailhead. Hunter Ambulance evaluated the patient, and the incident was cleared at 9:45 p.m.
